Although I was unable to attend the memorial at DU and the Campanile last night, I heard that there were over 150 people in attendance. That is an amazing outpour of love for our beloved friend Fre. I'm sure there were great stories shared, moments of how he's touched all of us, and tears shed for his early departure. I just wanted to let you know that I was there in mind and spirit, and I wanted to open up this blog entry for comments about the memorial.

The Brothers of Delta Upsilon have arranged a memorial service for those in the Bay Area. Please come and share your stories and love for our beloved friend, Fre Hindeya. Contributions will be accepted to help the family.

Friends of Fre,

Thank you again for your outpour of love and memories about our dear friend. I’ve heard the family has appreciated your support.

Jon Aminoff, Raul Llanes, Rani Sitty, Robin Chang, and Skye Girardin (Fre’s fraternity brothers) visited the family yesterday in National City. The house was filled with people supporting Fre’s mom and extended family. They enjoyed having Fre’s friends tell stories about his life away from home. They also got the details for the funeral. It will be held at:

Saturday, September 23 at 11 AM
Public visitation begins at 10:30 AM

The family would be extremely grateful if you were able to attend. They can also use support in covering the associated costs. In total, expenses will likely exceed $10,000. Let’s do our best to help Fre’s family. We are all at different points in our lives, so please give what you can - $20, $50, $100, $500. To do this, we have established the following ways for you to contribute:

1) Delta Upsilon Fraternity has set up a memorial fund to assist the family. If you are in Berkeley (or the Bay Area), please stop by the house to deliver your contribution. DU is located at 2425 Warring Street (between Channing and Dwight). Derick Sohn is the treasurer of DU and will be managing the fund. Please put your contribution in an envelope and write “Fre Hindeya Memorial Fund” on the front. Then, ask for Derick when dropping off your contribution, and any active brother will make sure the envelope gets into his hands. DU will aggregate these contributions and deliver one large check to his mother at the funeral on Saturday. All contributions received after Saturday will be aggregated and sent weekly to his mother. Contributions can be made in cash or checks can be made out to “Delta Upsilon Fraternity” with “Fre Hindeya Memorial Fund” written in the memo. If you cannot stop by in person, you can mail these checks to: Fre Hindeya Memorial Fund, c/o Derick Sohn, 2425 Warring Street, Berkeley, CA 94704.
2) If you would like to make an immediate contribution by credit card, we have set up a Paypal account. You can make your contribution to the email address: david@mobilize.org. If you do not have a Paypal account or have trouble making a contribution, please email me at david@mobilize.org and I’ll walk you through the process. All donations made by this Saturday will be given to Fre’s mom at the funeral. All donations made after this Saturday will be sent with the weekly checks from DU.
3) If you would like to send a check directly to Fre’s mom with a personal note, you are more than welcome to do that too. We have set up the first two ways to help reduce the workload on the family, but we are certain she will appreciate anything you would like to send directly. Fre’s mom’s name is Abeba Hindeya and her address is 912 East Second Street, National City, CA 91950.

Finally, I wanted to thank those who uploaded digital pictures on the Facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2208917003). We will print out these photos and bring them to the funeral. However, we would still like to get any other pictures that you have out there. If they are in digital format, please upload them to the Facebook group or email them to david@mobilize.org or jon.aminoff@gmail.com. If you have hard copy photos, please send them directly to Fre’s Mom.

Okay, I think that’s all we have set up here. If anyone else is organizing anything, please email me, post in on the blog, and we’ll try to get the word out to everyone. There are a bunch of people helping out in lots of ways, and I know it makes me realize how amazing Fre is to have so many people love him and want to help him and his family. I feel honored to have shared many years with Fre and have his beautiful soul touch my life. Thank you for sharing in this with me.

Do you have any recent pics of Fre?

Fre's Mom asked if anyone had recent pictures of Fre so they can make a collage of memories. If you have any pictures in digital format, please email them to david@mobilize.org. If you have them in hard copy, please contact David (at david@mobilize.org) to arrange pick up or tell you where to mail them.

Additionally, we just started an email list for anyone interested in keeping in the loop. We'll just email latest updates and requests from the family. If you have any difficulties email david@mobilize.org and he'll add you to the list.

Ideas for memorial or help family

There have been a number of ideas tossed around regarding a memorial service and various things to do to help the family and honor our dear friend. Please use this space to propose ideas and support other ideas. I'll kick it off with a few:

1) Memorial service can be hosted at Delta Upsilon Fraternity as some point in the upcoming week

2) A number of his fraternity brother and co-op friends have talked about setting up a fund to assist the family with funeral/memorial costs (details will be posted soon)

3) Jon Aminoff mentioned Fre's name on the jumbo tron at a SD Padres game as he just might have been the biggest Padres fan ever

Confirmed News and Details

As we hear more official news and details, we will post them here. Here is what I have confirmed so far:

Jon Aminoff talked with the police department and received confirmation that Fre's body was identified on Saturday early morning (between 3-5 AM).

The police department contacted the local police in National City. Officers went to Fre's Mom's house to inform her.

Jon and Raul are planning on traveling to the SD area to meet with Fre's Mom tomorrow (Sunday, 9/17) - if anyone else is in the area and interested, please contact one of them.

There are a number of rumors about exact cause of death. I will not post those rumors until the autopsy is performed on Monday or Tuesday. However, if you have inside and personal information, feel free to post it if you'd like.

As many of you may or may not know, our friend Fre Hindeya passed away at Cloyne Co-op on Friday, Sept 15. A number of his friends, fraternity brothers, and co-workers have been trying to connect with each other to find out what really happened, what is happening next, and what we can do to help.

Please invite anyone you know who knows Fre and would be interested in helping/attending a memorial service or in sharing stories with fellow friends.
